Steve Almond is a sweet man. He has a segment called “Show & Tell” on WGBH in Massachusetts and he chose LGLA to show and tell. He said that LGLA was kinda like a sexier re-vamp of Joan Didion’s Goodbye To All That.” He talks about when we read together and how I seemed very un-self conscious. (Trust me, I am self-conscious.) He talks about how he felt like a Jewish mother reading LGLA. He says funny and interesting things and it’s worth a listen. Listen here.
Anyway, I was super touched and surprised at his kindness and enthusiasm about my book.
Here’s a photo of us when we read together in Portland, Oregon.
And if feel like crying, watch this video of Steve introducing Cheryl Strayed, (aka Sugar on The Rumpus.)
Oh–I answered three questions for BOOKSTALKED about doing public readings. I talk about this one time I read in a brothel in Governor’s Island and awkward audience stuff that’s happened. Read it here.
I’ve been reading a lot. I just finished Joy School by Elizabeth Berg, Taking The Leap by Pema Chodron. I’m in the middle of Some Girls: My Life In A Harem by Jillian Lauren, The Defining Decade by Meg Jay and I Wore The Ocean In The Shape Of A Girl by Kelle Groom. and next I will begin STEAL ME FOR YOUR STORIES by Robb Todd.
What are you reading?
