NEWSFLASH: The unimitable Cheryl Strayed compiled a list of the ten best books she has read recently for Barnes & Noble. And would you believe it but Legs Get Led Astray is on the list! She says, of LGLA: Personal essays about youthful despair and dark delight. Tender and sharp and recklessly beautiful.
Also on the list were a few books I’m dying to read such as Dora: A Headcase by Lidia Yuknavtich, How Georgia Became O’Keefe by Karen Karbo and If I Knew Then What I know Now by Ryan Van Meter. Read Cheryl’s entire list here.
Speak of the devil–my mom and I went to Cheryl’s reading in NYC last night at the Barnes & Noble at Union Square.
It was so cool that my mom and Cheryl finally got to meet, because they have a little bit of a history. If you want to know the story behind that–you can read it my essay “On Mentors, Mothers, and house-sitting for Cheryl Strayed” here. I suppose it goes without saying that I’m beyond grateful to Cheryl for being such a supportive and special mentor in my life. And since we’re on the subject: here’s an essay I wrote about Cheryl’s Dear Sugar column called “Behind The Scenes of a Regular Sugar Reader.“
